Helen Rhee

Associate Professor at Westmont College

Rev. Dr. Rhee graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in history and earned a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy at Fuller Theological Seminary. Before coming to Westmont in 2004, she served as pastor of Hana Church in Buena Park, Calif. and is an ordained minister of Free Methodist Church Santa Barbara. She specializes in early Christian history, especially second- and third-century Christian literature and theology, focusing on the diverging Christian self-identities in relation to Greco-Roman culture and society. Her books include “Early Christian Literature: Christ and Culture in the Second and Third Centuries,” “Loving the Poor, Saving the Rich: Wealth, Poverty, and Early Christian Formation,” and “Wealth and Poverty in Early Christianity.” She received the Bruce and Adaline Bare Teacher of the Year Award in Humanities in 2010 and the Faculty Researcher of the Year Award in 2014. In the fall 2016, she led the Westmont in East Asia program.

Horst Schulze

chairman emeritus of Capella Hotel Group

Horst Schulze, chairman emeritus of Capella Hotel Group, is a legend and leader in the service world.  His vision has helped reshape concepts of customer service throughout the hospitality and service industries.

In 1991, Schulze was recognized as “corporate hotelier of the world” by HOTELS magazine. In 1995, he was awarded the Ishikawa Medal for his personal contributions to the quality movement. In 1999, Johnson & Wales University gave him an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree in Hospitality Management.

Schulze served as vice chairman of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company from 2001-2002, after serving as president and COO of The Ritz-Carlton Group, starting in 1988.  Under his leadership, the Group was awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in both 1992 and 1999—the first and only hotel company to win even one such award. In addition, Ritz-Carlton was continuously voted “best hotel company in the world” by meeting and other trade publications.

Upon joining Ritz-Carlton as a charter member and VP of Operations in 1983, Schulze created the operating and service standards that have become world famous. He was appointed EVP in 1987 and president and COO in 1988. When he left Ritz-Carlton to form the Capella Hotel Group, Schulze was responsible for the $2 billion Ritz-Carlton operations worldwide.

Hubert Morken

retired university professor

Hubert Morken is a retired university professor best known for his founding of the Religion and Politics Section of the American Political Science Association (APSA) and for his teaching, research, and publications.  In the APSA, The Hubert Morken Best Book Award is given every two years for the “best book” published anywhere dealing with religion and politics.  

Note:  Morken had no role in the naming of this award which came as a complete surprise to him after he retired.  Many deserve it.  Special help from Aaron Wildavsky, Daniel Elazar, Charles Dunn, Daniel Dreisbach, Robert Booth Fowler, Jo Renee Formicola, and William Bentley Ball, to name a few colleagues.

Married to Mary (Spradley) Morken, four children, fifteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Gary Hoag

Generosity Monk

Gary received his Ph.D. in New Testament from Trinity College, Bristol, UK. His expertise centers around what the Bible teaches on the handling of money, so he serves as a visiting professor at seven seminaries in four countries. He is a passionate follower of Jesus and an ordained minister who grew up in a faith-based family business. He first studied accounting then felt led to use his business skills in ministry settings. He has held administrative roles at Biola University, Colorado Christian University, and Denver Seminary.

Presently, he is known globally as the Generosity Monk as he has dedicated his life to encouraging Christian generosity. He provides spiritual and strategic counsel for nonprofits and denominations and nonprofits for nurturing generosity in constituencies and congregations. He also champions faithful governance and administration globally as International Liaison for ECFA and has helped establish ECFA-type organizations in seven countries (South Korea, Philippines, Australia, Kenya, Guatemala, India, and Egypt).

He has written or contributed to ten books, including three from ECFA Press, The Council: A Biblical Perspective on Board Governance (2018), The Choice: The Christ-Centered Pursuit of Kingdom Outcomes (2014), and The Sower: Redefining the Ministry of Raising Kingdom Resources (2010). His popular book for individuals and groups is Good and Faithful: Ten Stewardship Lessons for Everyday Living (2017).

Life:

His wife is Jenni. They live in Littleton, Colorado, and have a grown son, Sammy and a grown daughter, Sophie.

  • When Gary is home (as he travels about 180 nights a year), He and his wife, Jenni, take twice daily walks with their German Shorthair Pointer, Joy St. Clare.

  • Gary and his son, Sammy, love fly fishing. They have caught and released 34 of 60 types of trout in North America. Find their trout videos at www.sammysflyshop.com.

Dr. Emmanuel V. Dalavai

HR operations leader for public county hospitals

Passionate about cultural awareness and improving the multicultural literacy quotient of his clients, Dr. Emmanuel Dalavai has taught people from around the world to understand each other better. He has lived on three continents in places like India, Kansas City, Dallas, London, Paris, Beijing, Lyon, and has traveled extensively for work and pleasure. He is a lifelong learner and President of EVD Enterprises, a consulting firm he started several years ago that helps global business leaders better understand the complex worlds in which they live.

Emmanuel’s corporate career began in technical sales with SBC Communications & AT&T.  From that position he held several roles of increasing responsibility before leaving the company to devote himself to training and education in other fields. As a global business leader, he has worked in the telecom, healthcare and aviation/aerospace industries. Emmanuel has helped leaders to promote the positive aspects of increased cultural awareness, to bridge the cultural divide among various people groups, and has delivered cross-cultural and global language solutions to companies worldwide such as Marriott International and NASA.  

Presently, Emmanuel is employed with one of the largest public county hospitals in the U.S.A., where he leads about half of the hospital’s HR operations, and is also involved in strategy and integration across the enterprise. Previously, Emmanuel was employed by the Boeing Company, where he was the global leader of training, talent management, and leadership development for all 42 of Boeing’s largest supply chain management super-subsidiary. Furthermore, he served on the Organizational Change Management team to establish Boeing’s new Global Services business headquartered in Plano, TX. In addition to these duties, he leveraged tools such as the Hogan and ExPI assessments to coach several of Boeing’s high potential leaders at the Boeing Leadership Center in St. Louis. Dr. Dalavai currently serves as Adjunct Professor at the University of Dallas (and other academic institutions) in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX region. He possesses a passion for public speaking, and training professionals and students to equip themselves with the tools necessary to become transformational change agents in the marketplace.
