How Digital License Plates Could Serve the Greater Good

— by Neville Boston

ReviverTM is a California-based company whose genesis was born out of necessity in 2009.  At that time, I was visiting a DMV office and developed a desire to simplify DMV compliance and streamline vehicle registration renewal. This led to an epiphany for me, and yet another piece of technology coming out of a garage in California.  Today, our Reviver cloud platform and associated digital license plates (DLP) are being leveraged by a growing number of state-run motor vehicle administrations to accomplish my initial vision. Currently we sell our DLPs for use on vehicles registered in California and Arizona.  We are also selling them to commercial vehicle owners in Texas under a pilot study and are in various degrees of adoption with 11 states. Most recently, Florida announced that they are going to launch a pilot study with an anticipated launch date of July 1, 2021.

When I reflect on our progress, it’s as if the future has literally caught up with Back to the Future’s Doc Brown, except Reviver’s Digital License Plates offer more and look cooler than the simple barcode creative forces envisioned for Doc’s DeLorean. We currently offer two versions of our DLP: the RplateTM and the Rplate ProTM.  Both can be managed through an encrypted app downloadable to a smartphone.  In the case of the Rplate Pro, a more robust dashboard is offered for fleet managers. Both plates can also express banner messages and alerts. For example, if a vehicle is stolen, “STOLEN” can be pushed to the display once the theft is confirmed by law enforcement. Here is brief overview of our current product offerings:

Rplate: The Rplate is battery powered and can be installed and activated by the average consumer.  The background and alpha-numeric characters can be changed from a white background with black characters to a white background with black characters. Through the app a user can select banner messages to display on the plate to express loyalty, faith, a mood, a special event, support for a cause or a business slogan.  Through the app vehicle owners can also easily renew their registration. Registration renewal is a two-click process eliminating the need for renewal stickers and associated paperwork. This saves consumers time and/or visits to the DMV.

Rplate Pro: The Rplate Pro does everything the Rplate does and then some. It comes with GPS on board which requires continuous power, so it is hard wired to a vehicle’s power source and requires professional installation.  It is used by individuals, parents of new drivers who want to monitor young drivers’ behaviors behind the wheel and by fleets. While the commercial fleet space is well served by fleet-management software, only Reviver’s Rplate Pro allows fleet owners to digitally renew registration across an entire fleet.  Thus, eliminating the need to manually renew and apply renewal stickers to plates across an entire fleet. Rplate Pro features include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Geofencing: Allows vehicle owners to establish a geographic radius to control and track vehicles and to receive alerts if a vehicle violates the geofence boundaries.

  • Locate Vehicle:  Identify where the vehicle is located.

  • Valet Park: Monitor vehicles entrusted with valets or to mitigate joy rides.

  • Antitheft: If the vehicle is jostled or tampered with the owner is alerted through the app.

Like all technology, Reviver’s product offerings continue to evolve. Behind our company’s growth is a desire to serve the greater good and an adherence to the Golden Rule. Our DLP’s have the ability to communicate alerts to the general population, from Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts, as well as a variety of important social or faith-based messages. Importantly, one of our company’s sales avenues is through a channel we call affinity.  Reviver’s affinity channel allows organizations like Susan G. Komen to align with Reviver and generate awareness and revenue to fight breast cancer through Rplate sales. We are fortunate to be first to market with our technology and our products. With that opportunity also comes a responsibility to help others.  Our affinity channel is perfectly tuned towards helping through a number of social causes we see ahead of us. While profit sustains us, it’s not always about profit, sometimes spreading a positive message, or getting behind a cause via our platform while sharing our rewards has deeper value.

In addition to Susan G. Komen; professional sports teams, college alumni associations and others participate in the Reviver affinity program. Most recently, we added Bayside Church to our affinity ranks.  Bayside’s custom Rplates express faith-based messaging and allow church members to express their conviction through a very unique platform. My initial vision for a digital license plate was as a solution to a widespread challenge all vehicle owners face. I feel we have accomplished that with our technology, but the platform is much bigger than I initially imagined it. Its potential extends well beyond revolutionizing vehicle compliance. It includes an ability to communicate, and in so doing, align and unite people around common causes that help us all. I am grateful for that.
