Furniture Fit for the Kingdom Video

This Monday, we take a look into the world of expert woodworking for inspiration. From Christianity Today's "This is our City" video series, we focus on Harrison Higgins, a Virginia woodworker whose furniture is reputed to last up to hundreds of years! Harrison explains his work as more of an art -- one that glorifies God by revealing the beauty in his creation. Even further, he encourages others to see creation beyond its use as a resource but as an opportunity to steward wisely as a sacrament towards God.

Some favorite Quotes:

“These things are here because God loves us … means we go to handle them differently.”

“There’s this sense that you want the furniture to live up to this piece of lumber, the tree it came from. We want what we build from the tree to be worth what that tree was.”

The final quote from the essays of Wendell Berry in the The Gift of Good Land:

“To live, we must daily break the body and shed the blood of the Creation. When we do this knowingly, lovingly, skillfully, reverently, it is a sacrament. When we do it ignorantly, greedily, clumsily, destructively, it is a desecration. In such desecration we condemn ourselves to spiritual and moral loneliness, and others to want.”
